What is Squareword?
Squareword is a free daily word game played on a grid. Instead of one hidden word, there’s a hidden 5×5 square: five words across and five words down, sharing their letters. The official site calls it “a daily word game in two dimensions” and puts the goal plainly — uncover all 5×5 letters using as few guesses as possible.
There’s one new puzzle a day, it’s free, and it runs in your browser.
Squareword is not Punnett Squareword
Two different games share the name, and search results mix them up. The one on this page lives at squareword.org — the 5×5 grid where rows and columns spell words.
Punnett Squareword, at squarewords.io, is a separate puzzle game with its own rules. If the game in front of you isn’t a 5×5 letter grid, you’re playing the other one.
How to play
Type any valid five-letter word and submit it. Your guess isn’t placed in one row — it’s checked against all five horizontal words at once.
- Letters in the right spot are placed in the grid, in green.
- Letters that belong in a row but not where you put them show up in the yellow box beside that row, waiting to be placed.
The keyboard keeps score of every letter for you:
- White — not guessed yet.
- Grey — not in the square at all.
- Yellow — some copies of this letter still need placing.
- Green — every copy is placed correctly.
The columns are your best friend. Once a few letters are in, each column is a five-letter word with gaps, and filling one column hands you a letter in five different rows. The counter next to the grid shows how many guesses you’ve used; tap it to look back over them.
Where to play Squareword
Play it at squareword.org, the official site. It’s free, there’s no account, and a new puzzle appears every day.
Squareword unlimited and archive
Two things people look for, and what we found on the official site:
- Unlimited or practice mode: the site runs one daily puzzle. We didn’t find a replay or endless mode.
- Archive: we didn’t find a browsable archive of past grids either. We don’t post old answers here.
If you want to keep going after the daily, the games below are the closest substitutes — Waffle for another word grid, Sedecordle for many words at once.

FAQ
- Is Squareword the same as Punnett Squareword?
- No. Squareword (squareword.org) is a 5×5 letter grid where every row and column is a word. Punnett Squareword (squarewords.io) is a separate puzzle game that happens to share part of the name.
- Does Squareword have an unlimited mode?
- Not that we could find. The official site runs one puzzle a day. If you want more after the daily, try a similar game such as Waffle or Sedecordle.
- How many guesses do I get?
- There's no fixed limit. The goal is to uncover all 25 letters in as few guesses as possible, and your guess count is your score.
- Do my guesses go in a particular row?
- No. Every guess is checked against all five horizontal words at once. Letters that land in the right spot are placed in the grid; letters that belong to a row but not in that spot appear in the yellow box beside it.
- When does a new Squareword come out?
- There's a new grid every day on squareword.org.
